Are you driving around with dim lights, grateful that you have lights? Or, are you driving around with bright lights, wishing they were brighter?

On my way to work the other morning, it was dark. I was in a rural area that had zero streetlights. As I was struggling to see, I thought maybe I had forgotten to turn my bright lights back on after passing a car. Without checking the dashboard icons because I didn’t want to take my eyes off the road, I moved the lever that controlled the lights. In a flash, it got even more challenging to see the road. Without hesitation, I turned my bright lights back on, and all of a sudden, I could see so much better. But why?

My bright lights didn’t magically get brighter in the five seconds they were off, my eyesight certainly didn’t get any better, and it didn’t get less dark outside. So, why could I see so much better after turning my bright lights off and right back on in a matter of seconds?

Perspective was the only logical answer I could come up with. I had been driving so long with my bright lights on, I no longer realized how much they were helping until I compared them to my dim lights. In five seconds, I developed a new appreciation for my bright lights.

I had a long drive and a lot of time to ponder this realization.

Sometimes, we take people or things for granted. We get so used to having something that we stop appreciating it and start expecting it. If for some reason, we lose that thing (whatever it may be), we tend to get mad. We feel that life is not fair. We feel defeated. We feel unlucky. We feel like the cards are stacked against us.

We experience all of these negative emotions because we stopped appreciating what we had. We stopped being grateful for how valuable it was to us because we expected it always to be there. This doesn't mean wanting brighter lights is wrong. It's just a reminder to be grateful for the lights you have right now.

It’s so important not to take things or people for granted. Always be grateful for what you have, and never lose perspective of how incredibly blessed you are/were to have it.
